01. PyeongPyeongjo hoesang, “Sangryeongsan” (4:43) Yeongsan hoesang is a representative instrumental piece of poetic music and it is a type of suite, where eight or nine short songs come together to form a long song. Sangryeongsan, the first song of Yeongsan hoesang, is a song so slow and long that it is difficult to recognize the rhythm. This is why it is also known as “Gin yeongsang (long yeongsan).” Today’s performance is a gayageum solo. ○ Gayageum: Kim Yun-hi 02. Sinawi (30:32) Sinawi, which is an instrumental ensemble rooted in shaman music, is a song that enables the musicians to freely express their talents through improvisation within a consistent rhythm. Because all different sounds from various instruments come together and create a dissonance, the song’s attraction is creating harmony within the dissonance and this is why it is called “harmony within inharmony” and “order within chaos.” Sinawi that will be performed today presents an exciting harmony between the West and East through the combination of ajaeng that seemed to evoke even the deepest emotions, exciting geomungo, and drums that pound at our heart. ○ Drum: Nam Gung-yeon, Ajaeng: Yun Seo-gyeong, Geomungo: Lee jae-ha 03. Pansori sugeungga, “Passage of Catching the Rabbit” (58:57) The passage of catching the rabbit is about the rabbit, who has been lured by the turtle, telling all kinds of lies to save its life when the patrolmen at the Dragon King’s underwater palace try to cut open its belly to take the liver. ○ Vocal: Jo Jeong-hi, Drummer: Jeong Jun-ho 04.
