Maisan is one of the most unique mountains in the nation. Maisan is a mountain located in Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, and is said to have been created by tectonic movements during the Cretaceous Period in the later Mesozoic Era. It was given its name because of its strange appearance in which it looks like a blade pointing upwards. In the Silla Dynasty it was called Seodasan, in the Goryeo Dynasty it was called Yungchulsan, and in the early Joseon Dynasty it was called Sokgeumsan. Finally, during the reign of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty, it was called 'Maisan' because it was said to look like the ear of a horse. Like its unique appearance, there are also many attractions near Maisan. To the south is where Taffoni is the most developed in the world, in which there are holes that look as if they were made by bombing. Below it at the Tapsa Temple, there are over 80 stone pagodas, which are said to have been built by one person for over thirty years through his religious beliefs. Discover the unique beauties of Maisan that change depending on the direction of your view.
